The Vietnamese claim that Halong Bay is a wonder of the world and I must say I do agree. I joined a small group on the day tour to Halong Bay. Took us around 3.5 hours to get to the Halong Bay pier with a rest stop at a large souvenirs shop which in my opinion can be skipped. Tour operator could have taken the highway which would have shaved off the journey by 1.5 hours. The cruise on board the boat was nice though, accompanied by a seafood lunch. The scenery was breathtaking and one must visit the 2 largest caves (by walking) in Halong Bay. Prior to exploring the caves, you will transfer to a small boat to explore the stalactites within the cave. This is the time when you can also choose to kayak and do a little of your own exploration but we were interested in taking photos and hence chose the ‘lazy’ option of someone rowing the boat for us. Overall the experience is well worth it. The next time I return to Halong Bay, I will definitely choose to stay a couple of days there.
